Antoine Lavoisier Essays - Chemical Elements,

Antoine Lavoisier Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (lah vwah ZYAY) was one of the most popular French researchers and was a significant government official. His speculations of ignition, his improvement of an approach to order the components also, the primary present day course reading of science prompted his being known as the dad of present day science. He added to a significant part of the exploration in the field of science. He is cited for saying, Nothing is lost, nothing is made, everything is changed. Lavoisier was conceived in Paris, France on Aug. 26, 1743. At the point when he was eleven years of age he went to a school called Mazain. For Lavoisier's most recent two years in school he found a lot of enthusiasm for science. He got fantastic training and built up an enthusiasm for all parts of science, particularly science. Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaill instructed Lavoisier about meteorological perception. On 1763 Lavoisier got his four year certification and on 1764 a licentiate which permitted him to rehearse his calling. In his extra time he contemplated books about science. His first paper was expounded on gypsum, additionally known by hydrated calcium sulfate. He portrayed its compound and physical properties. He was chosen for the French Academy of Sciences in 1768. On 1771 he wedded Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze. She made a difference Lavoisier by drawing outlines for his logical works and deciphering English documentation for him. In contrast to prior scientific experts, Lavoisier gave specific consideration to the heaviness of the fixings engaged with synthetic responses and of the items that came about. He painstakingly estimated the loads of the reactants and items. He noticed that the heaviness of the air wherein burning happened diminishes. He found that when the consuming material joined with the air by one way or another furthermore, that the air weighed less. Lavoisier found that the heaviness of the items of burning equivalents the heaviness of the responding fixings. This perception got known as the law of protection of mass (or matter). He rehashed a large number of the trials of prior scientific experts yet deciphered the outcomes far in an unexpected way. On 1772 he was concentrating on burning, which he is generally known for in science. Lavoisier introduced a significant diary on change of water into earth dissipation. This carried him to the Oxygen Theory of Combustion. On 1774 Lavoisier did probes calcinations of tin and lead and affirmed the expansion of weight of metals on calcinations from burning of air. By exhibiting the idea of burning, he invalidated the phlogiston hypothesis. The phlogiston hypothesis expressed that every single combustible material contained a substance called phlogiston. As per this hypothesis, materials radiated phlogiston as they consumed. Air was essential for burning since it retained the phlogiston that was discharged. This was idea at an opportunity to be a reality. Lavoisier appeared this hypothesis to be bogus and made oxygen the explanation that things consumed, not phlogiston. Lavoisier consumed reading material that upheld the hypothesis. He was attempting to make a point that the phlogiston hypothesis was invalid and oxygen is the new answer to burning. He laid the structure for understanding substance responses as blends of components to frame new materials, or items. He closed that burning outcomes from the quick concoction association of a combustible material with a newfound gas, which he named oxygen, recently known as dephilogisticated air. oxygen signifies corrosive maker. Lavoisier and others had discovered that oxygen is a piece of a few acids. Lavoisier erroneously contemplated that oxygen is expected to make all acids. He created endings of the level of oxygen by including certain closure, for example, - ic or - ous. With French cosmologist and mathematician Pierre Simon Laplace, Lavoisier directed investigations on the breath in creatures. Their examinations demonstrated a likeness between conventional synthetic responses and the procedures that occur in living life forms. These examinations were the reason for the science presently known as organic chemistry. Lavoisier additionally assisted with building up a framework for naming compound substances dependent on their arrangement. This framework is still being used. He made the absolute first present day science text named Trait? el?mentaire de chimie (Elements of Chemistry). Many think of it as the main reading material on present day science. Here for the first run through the components are spread out efficiently. His rundown included numerous mixes, which were believed to be components at that point. Lavoisier worked out responses in compound conditions that regard the preservation of mass. I now know almost everyone who sent a picture in, and ironically one kid even ended up at that little brick school down the road despite posing with his card. Le sigh. I suppose it happens even to the best of us. But without further ado, lets roll out the red carpet for our first 3 respondents. We start with Narce 13, a proud 13-er (one of the 13(37)? okay, bad joke.) who may or may not like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, I didnt ask. He maintains that he is in fact NOT making a peace sign, but, and I quote, as an otaku, that can only be V for Victory!' The acute observer will note the Class of 2013 poster in the background and fantastically nerdy t-shirt, an excellent choice of attire. Kudos, Narce. Next up is Nathan 13 of Ponte Vedra, FL, who is actually one of my neighbors cousins. Weve never met. We actually just found this out. Fun fact. Anyways, Nathan goes for inquisitive look. Nathan, keep practicing. You will be making this face a lot next year at psets. And finally we come to Sheila 13 of Connecticut, who opts for separate pictures of the tube and card. Probably because they came at different times, but well pretend that artistic emphasis was the goal. Clearly. So send me your pictures and Ill keep adding them to the post! Happy Valentines Day from MIT! EDIT: Oh, but wait! Theres more! First off in round two, we have Richard 13 from Brawley, CA, and if you dont know where that is, its ok (99.9999% of the population doesnt). I didnt. I had to look it up on a map. I also tend to know nothing about geography west of Wisconsin, though. Also, please note that his beaver says Tim. That is awesome. Next up is Paula 13 from Coconut Creek, FL, wearing yet another awesomely-nerdy-shirt-from-the-COOP-that-I-wish-I-owned. And finally we have Maria 13 from Cleveland, OH (where I actually lived for a year or so, fun fact) sporting the classic tube-card-card pose. Solid choice. Alright, guys, unless you get me a picture in the next 34 minutes, you have missed your chance for a moment of fame on the MITty blogs. Hope you had a great Valentines Day! EDIT #2: Okay, Alex 13 brought up a good point in that itll be Valentines Day for three hours longer in California than Boston in the EST. So Im not really being fair in cutting off your picture submits. So just keeping sending them. Its not like Ill be asleep. So speaking of Alex, hes from Colton, California (I know where that is! yay Google maps.) and will likely be in for a surprise this time next year. Surprise! Boston is cold. Sorry to spoil it for you. And Happy Valentines Day, again. Lets see who can be the last person to get their picture in before Valentines Day officially ends. A contest to be last. That should be a new one for you guys.

The Collapse Of The Old Authority - 926 Words

In spite of the stop-go policies, the development of demand management as a means of stabilising the economy was seen as vastly effective. Those who thought this were being mistaken. Economist Christopher Dow suggested in 1964 ‘as far as internal conditions are concerned then, budgetary and monetary policy failed to be stabilising, and must on the contrary be regarded as having been positively destabilising’ a bold statement indeed. He described the overheating of the economy in 1960 at least somewhat to over-expansionary policies in the years before. The economy was in a relatively stable position, inflation (4%) and unemployment (1.4%) both moderately low. Productivity growth (4%) was respectable though still below competitors. Nonetheless, there was what seemed to be a persistent problem by now, a balance of payments issue, which had big impacts on the economy. Labour inherited a current account deficit of some  £800m. The causes of this substantial deficit were ascribed to a loss of price competitiveness. The change in dynamics of the market had also differed. Britain’s manufacturers found it easy to export and oppose importing in the 1950s as they faced a sellers’ market. Though now, industrialised countries had become more competitive and led to new competition in foreign markets. Improvements in the balance of payments should have been the primary target. We will write a custom essay sample on Technological Influences: Good or Bad? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Technology has affected many teenagers and their families. The Growing Up Online goes into depth about the pressures and benefits with the internet and technology. In the video, many teens admit the technological advances are becoming a little too out of control. A child named Ryan Halligan committed suicide because of all the online threats and cyber bullying he was receiving. His father had no idea about the severity of these letters his son was receiving because they were all read by Ryan in the privacy of his own room. The anonymous messages were only possible through the use of this technology. Ryan’s ability to keep his online life private and away from his parent’s eyes is also a result of the digital technology. People are starting to express their feelings online, and not to other peoples’ faces. The cyber bully who was sending Ryan these horrible messages, would not confront Ryan at school, he would only harass him online. Technology is starting to create a world of people who are becoming less social. This is just one example of how the online world can create horrible worlds for the people who use it. Greg Burta is a teenager who was always isolated in the privacy of his room with his eyes locked in hard on the computer. He would play video games constantly or use the computer to â€Å"read† novels in five minutes. He would rarely leave his room and grew very impatient toward his family. This got to be so bad that his parents would text or email him, while in the same house, because it was the best way to get ahold of him. His grades were slipping and his relationship with his family began to plunge. Greg was not a special exception either; many kids today are doing the exact same thing, if not worse. They become so locked up in their rooms that they don’t know how to have fun any differently.. The use of computers, phones, and TVs is becoming an obsessive â€Å"hobby† that is starting to make people less social, and overweight. Their need to be constantly connected with their phones or on computers scares me for our future. The video Digital Nation gives more examples about the side effects of the internet. It shows one study about how technology can truly lead to death. In South Korea, there are miniature cafes called â€Å"PC Bongs,† people go to these cafes and become addicted to playing video games. Young men stay in these cafes for hours, and even days at a time, only playing video games. This is an addiction that can be very dangerous, and it has even led to death. These boys can get so engrossed in their gaming that they fail to eat or drink, and can play to the true point of physical exhaustion, and even death. Sitting on a couch for hours and even days is not beneficial for people’s health, and even their eyes. People need to be active and more social during the day instead of wasting time playing these games. The online world had a good impact of a girl named Amber. She used pages like Myspace and Facebook to feel important and pretty to people. When she wasn’t on these sites, she felt unimportant and useless. Amber would take explicit and questionable pictures of her self posing inappropriately and post them on Facebook and Myspace. When she would receive positive comments about the pictures, it would comfort her and make her feel beautiful. Her parents were completely blindsided when the principal relayed this onto them. He said that parents, students, and teachers had seen explicit pictures of their daughter and that it was completely unethical and inappropriate. They had no idea that Amber was doing any of this because when she used the computer, she was in her own safe haven of her bedroom. For Amber, the online world was a good way to express herself and her feelings. Most teens that do what Amber did become so caught up with their other online side that they can sometimes forget who they really are. The internet is a very good way for people to stay in touch with each other. In present times, people are video chatting, e-mailing, and instant messaging from all over the world. I went to Spain over the summer to stay with family, and emailing or using video chat made it so easy for my family and friends to connect with each other. The internet is also a good way to catch up on the latest information and news. This feature benefitted me and many others greatly. Every day the latest headlines from the news hits the internet faster than it goes onto paper. Many people rely on the internet for news about the stock market, foreign affairs, local news, and our country’s news. It has become very popular and almost a necessity in our country. Technological advances do have positive and negative side effects on our generation. Teens do too wrapped up in the technology that we have today. The boy that cyber bullied Ryan online, sending him vulgar messages, took advantage of the internet and used it to harm Ryan, but to feel better about himself. This could easily have been avoided if he was educated about the harmful effects of the online world. Greg played video games and used the computer to get summaries about books he didn’t want to read. He should have time limits for the uses of technological machines so he doesn’t get too carried away. Amber created a place where she felt comfortable by making an online persona. This site she had helped her gain confidence by all of the positive comments people left, even though she exploited herself. Without the news of current event, it would be hard to keep up on what is happening in the world. The technological advances that we have today give us a tremendous amount of knowledge and lessons that we can use our everyday life. Teens learn not to cyber bully because they know the possible outcomes. Some learn to understand that they need limits on machines, and some learn between right and wrong. People use the technological advances for everything these days, and now that they have been introduced, not very many people would even consider going without. The Book Of Mark An Essay For Humanities Courses That Treat The Essay

The Book of Mark: An Essay for Humanities Courses That Treat The Bible As A Historical Document PART A MARK'S THEOLOGY REFLECTED IN WRITING Mark and the other evangelists used basically five ways to change, edit or enhance Jesus' sayings to reflect their own views of Christianity. According to the Five Gospels Book, plagiarism and changing of writing was not a crime, but actually very common Mark's time. Besides, Mark never knew Jesus first- hand, he somehow had to make a 'story' from basically Hearsay! Mark groups different parables and sayings of Jesus by topic; making a false impression that these things happened in order. This may have little effect on changing the meaning of the lesson, however it illustrates the fact that Mark was trying to author a "readable" story for people, rather than a book of facts. The best example would be in Mark 10:17-31 (Jesus Counsel to the Rich) It is doubtful that these things happened at the same time; however, they are GREY in The Five Gospels anyway ... and probably didn't happen as Mark describes. This brings us to Mark's writing style. Mark seems to "tack-on" sentences to Jesus' teachings to make them more "Christian." This really changes the meaning more than any other tactic! Who knows what Mark may have edited-out to accomplish what he wanted to impress upon his readers? In this, he tries to interpret the meaning of Jesus' actions ... and does this in a misleading way. For example: Mark 2:19, Jesus regarding Fasting. Jesus makes a strong statement against importance to fasting, but Mark (in 2:20) tags on: "But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and they will fast in those days." This blatantly shows that Mark held higher regard for the Old Traditions of Fasting rather than Jesus' new teachings! This is also an example of "Christianizing Jesus" according to traditions that have already earned respect from Jews in their tradition. (Wow, this is starting to sound like a fight between Today's Political Parties, isn't it? [Jesus = Liberal Politics / Judaism = Conservative Politics]). Finally, Mark likes to "soften the blow" of Jesus' Hard sayings. He does this for probably the same reason Paul preached that Circumcision was not required for Christians. A good example is The Unforgivable Sin (Mark 3:28-). Jesus clearly states that words against the Holy Spirit are unforgivable. However, Mark adds that "all things are possible with God," which softens this harsh rule! MARK & THE PAROUSIA Mark lived during the Jewish War of 66-70 ADE. Unlike the later evangelists, Matthew and Luke, Mark believed the Parousia was upon us, about to happen at any time! And, for obvious reason: he lived in an extremely troubled time for the Jews, and he had not been worried yet by the Parousia's delay as were later evangelists. Mark 13:4 - 'Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?' According to Mark's writing, Jesus first predicts the destruction of the Temple. However, Mark had written after the destruction of the Temple in 70 ADE! This tactic agrees with The Five Gospels: writing apocalyptic sayings of Jesus after they have already been "fulfilled." I would suppose he did this to give credit to his writing of the second coming of God. An example is the parable of The Fig Tree in Mark 13:28- 37. This addition, obviously written by Mark and not said by Jesus, shows the urgency in which Mark expected the parousia: "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place." You can easily see why the other evangelists, Matthew, Luke & John, re-wrote Mark's apocalyptic writing to be more of a "Sacred Time," and less definite. Mark used a common tactic of quoting scripture (especially Dan, Isa, Mic & some Psalms) for his apocalyptic writing. We also saw this in Paul's letters years before. People regarded scripture as fact, therefore a perfect tool to give credit to Mark's & Paul's new writing! Our own culture today is wrapped-up in

Colostrum essays

Immunoglubins/Immunity/Colostrum essays Importance of Immunoglobulins at Birth The development of animals requires a sterile environment, and with mammals we call this place the womb. But after birth, the newborn enters a world with millions of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that may cause disease or even death. It is important that the newborn develop a healthy immune system so it is less likely to become diseased. While humans receive 90% of immunoglobulins, essential proteins that respond and protect the body, via the placenta, dogs and cats receive only 5-10%, and unfortunately, livestock receive no immunoglobulins. This is why it is important for livestock to receive immunoglobulins in some other way. Colostrum is another way immunity is transferred between a mother and her newborn. Colostrum is the first secretion from the mammary glands of mothers after parturition. Colostrum contains leukocytes, lactoferrin, lysozyme, cytokines, lymphokines, proline-rich polypeptides, and immunoglobulins. The most important of these being immunoglobulins because they can only be absorbed during the 24 or 36 hours after birth. This is the only time the immunoglobulins can be absorbed through the gut and intestines of the animal. In fact, the most immunoglobulins are in the colostrum during the first 12 hours (6%) and may decrease to only 1% after 24 hours. Thus, it is critical for animals to obtain as much colostrum as they can during the first day of life. There are a number of reasons why immonoglobulins are important to develop an animals first immunity. Immunoglobulins consist of five different forms of antibodies like IgM, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgA. IgM antibodies are antibacterial and help neutralize endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria. IgD antibodies are found on lymphocytes and make up a small percentage of immunoglobulins. IgE antibodies mediate allergic and anaphylatic reactions and also serve a minor response to the immune syste ...

The main ways to promote Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The main ways to promote - Term Paper Example The lack of adequate product promotion can fail any business whether big or small. Hence, it is highly necessary to disseminate the product to the largest segment; if a business intends to attract large numbers of customers. The underlying key factor to any business’s success remains centered on having a good promotion. There are many ways to promote a product in Qatar, but the most effective ways include advertising, personal selling, discounts and special offers. This paper discusses the main ways to promote a product and which ways better to apply promotion in Qatar. However good the product, it is highly unlikely to sell itself, which is why a good promotion becomes necessary; to ensure a company markets its products efficiently to its customers. Effective ways to promote a product successfully in a competitive market include the following: Media promotions may involve using radio, television, newspapers, magazines, posters and billboards, or handing out leaflets in the street or homes. Small agro-processors find the use of television and newspapers as unrealistic options, but following several market types of research other approaches seem viable. A majority of businesses utilize the radio approach by using a number of rural radio stations to promote their products. This approach not only promotes products to a wider segment of consumers, but it also offers the possibility of relatively low-cost advertising. The other alternative that has proven effective in promoting a product a product using commercials on televisions involves the out-of-home TV viewing (Stafford, 2005). Most people hate commercials, so they tend to change channels when commercials come up; that is why home-TV viewing cannot effectively suit as a way of promoting a company’s products. However, people tend to find it interesting watching comme rcials when on the move for example in buses, in shops,

Marketing Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Marketing Assignment - Essay Example Successful differentiation gives the firm a competitive advantage as customers will look at the products as superior and unique and can be achieved in various ways. This paper will first detail eight ways to differentiate product offerings, and then concentrate on packaging the product in a more creative manner and incorporating new functional features into the product or product innovation. Strategies for Product Differentiation One way to differentiate products is via product innovation by adding functions or features into a product and commanding a higher price (Trout & Rivkin, 2012: p 34). These features can be added through acquiring or licensing complementary feature sets or by using the firm’s in-house team for product development. Another way to differentiating products is through packaging. At times, all it takes to differentiate or re-energize a product is via changing the packaging. This was very effective when it was used in collaboration with another product and d elivered in an innovative manner. While this method does not have enough value to change a consumer’s life, the manner of packaging offers more convenience allowing them to charge more (Trout & Rivkin, 2012: p 45). A firm could also pursue other market niches in areas that are unsophisticated (Trout & Rivkin, 2012: p 67). ... Yet another product differentiation strategy is via the generation of referrals. A firm, in this case, helps to cultivate referrals and create sales models around the type of selling that are consultative while being less confrontational (Trout & Rivkin, 2012: p 76). In a competitive market, prospects referred by happy customers will be inclined to buy products. This can be achieved by offering incentives to current customers in the hope they will send referrals. Other firms will offer increased service as a means of product differentiation. They combine superior service with a commodity product that helps to differentiate this commodity. Through re-defining their service, the firm, redefines the playing field and offers a home-court advantage since other competitors do not use this combination while they charge a premium for the product. Another strategy is via figuring out what they can guarantee. Since the firm has to deliver on expectations from the client or refund them, they wi ll offer an upfront guarantee (Trout & Rivkin, 2012: p 87). A firm could guarantee their clients that their prices are the best, and offer to refund their money if they find cheaper items of the same quality elsewhere. Since the customer has not time to compare prices, they will buy this product because the price is guaranteed to be the lowest. Firms could also collaborate with complementary service or product providers when their product does not stand by itself as a unique offering. Both entities benefit from this arrangement, for instance, the HBO’s partnerships with motels to show their movies allows HBO to have exclusive viewership in these motels while the motels benefit from showing exclusive movies. Finally, a firm could also employ their hidden assets as a

George Herbert Mead Early Life Sociology Essay

George Herbert Mead Early Life Sociology Essay Higher Education Mead graduated from Oberlin College in 1883 and matriculated at Harvard from 1887-1888 where he studying philosophy and sociology and graduated with a Masters degree. Although he belonged to a deeply religious family, Mead became a devout naturalist and non-believer after attending college. After leaving Harvard, he participated in many causes and was an ardent activist of any progressive causes. He marched in favour of the womens suffragette and took part in several civic duties in Chicago. The Chicago Philosopers Club 1896 Mead was influenced by Charles Darwins Theory of Evolution which is evident in his theories as a naturalist. At Harvard, Mead studied with Josiah Royce who was a major influence in his life, and  William James, whose children he tutored. In 1888, Mead left Harvard and travelled to Germany. There, he studied with psychologist Wilhelm Wundt who was his influence for the concept of the gesture, which would soon be an important aspect of his work. In 1891 he married Helen Kingsbury Castle. He taught at the University of Michigan and then the University of California. Mead wrote intensively over a 40-year career, however he didnt publish any books. He published over 100 scholarly articles. Mead died of heart failure on April 26, 1931. Following his death, his students put together a collection of his notes, unpublished letters and lessons, and finally published a book of his thoughts and teachings. Epistemology Ontology He observed that people acquired knowledge about behavior based on what they observe and acquire from society. The principle of sociality is the  ontological  foundation of  Meads  concept. The distinction between mind and matter and that between consciousness and the physiological organism is a distinction which is drawn between contents which may appear on either side of the line. Mead noted that there is more than what meets in the eye in terms of human interactions. This means, that there are reasons behind certain actions, which can be brought out through micro-investigations of human interaction. People who influenced Mead Mead was influenced by his friend John Dewey who led him into educational theory. However Meads thinking diverged from that of Dewey and he developed the famous psychological theories of mind, self and society. This idea was also greatly influenced by Wilhelm Wundt; who Mead met when he went to Germany to study psychology At Harvard, Mead studied with an American idealist philosopher Josiah Royce who also was an influence. Mead was influenced by Adam Smith and thus identified the social act of economic exchange. In Meads writing I and the Me Mead takes William Jamess distinction between the I and the Me and develops it further. William James was a renowned pragmatist philosopher. The prominent sociologist Charles Cooley (A philosopher) also influenced Meads thinking. People who were influenced by Mead Herbert Blumer, a sociologist who studied at the University of Chicago was influenced by Mead. He took over Meads lecturing responsibilities and went on to chair the Department of Sociology at the University of California Berkeley. He is often referred to as the heir of George Herbert Mead. During the second half of the twentieth Century, Meads theory of symbolic interactionism was separated into two distinct branches : The Chicago school under Herbert Blumer and the Iowa school under Manford Kuhn. Both of whom were influenced by Mead. Norman Denzin and Sheldon Stryker also continued to develop the Symbolic Interactionism theory of Mead. Ervin Goffmans so-called dramaturgical sociology is also highly influenced by Mead. Major Publications Mind, Self, and Society (1934) The Philosophy of the Act (1938) The Philosophy of the Present (1932) Basic Sociological Concepts Double Centre of Gravity Taking the role of the other Self Development The Self The self emerges from social experience Individual selves are the products of social interaction and not the biological or logical preconditions of the mentioned interaction Hence The self is not part of the body, and it does not exist at birth Explaining further in the absence of social interaction (i.e. isolated children) the body may grow but no self will develop. Social experience involves communication and exchange of symbols Dog example A dog responds to what you do, but humans respond to what you have in mind as you do it. Social interaction involves seeing ourselves as others see us taking the role of the other (Mead). Double Centre of Gravity In Meads concept of the self, he expressed Double Centre of Gravity by dividing the self in to the I and the Me. The I and the Me The I and the Me are derived from the self. The Self is the relationship between I and Me The Me is the internalization of others perspective of ourselves the perspective we get of ourselves from how others treat and interact with us. The I is the part of us that responds to these internalized attitudes.   Explaining further the Me is the social self that takes into account the reactions of others, while the I is the indistinctive part of the self which has ideas and imagination and is independent to social norms. Taking the role of the other Mead suggested that socialization derived primarily from peoples ability to take the role of the other. Taking the role of the other means putting yourself in another persons place to think/reflect about yourself. Taking the role of the other helps to integrate the individual with organized social processes By taking the role of the other, Mead meant putting oneself in the place of another individual in such a manner that one arouses the same response in both. Self Development According to Mead, developing the self is learning to take the role of the other   The first stage is Prep Children imitate and begin to understand symbols such as languages and gestures The Second Stage is Play Children role-play and pretend to be another person. Play involves assuming roles of significant others, helping kids see the world from others points of view. The Third stage is Game Children, at 7 or 8 begin to understand others roles and responsibilities, making games possible. The fundamental difference between the game stage and its antecedent play stage lies in the childs ability to take the roles of multiple people at the same time Generalized Other The norms, values, attitudes and expectations of people in general; the childs ability to take the role of generalized other is a significant step in the development of a self. The individual defines his or her own behavior with reference to the generalized attitude of the social group(s) they occupy. Significant other An Individual who significantly influences someone elses life. i.e. Individuals who are most important in development of the self. (e.g. parent) MEADS CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIOLOGY Mead is one of the most influential and acclaimed sociologist of the 20th Century Praised by Critics throughout the world as a pioneer and a Stalwart Has had several books published posthumously about his teachings the individual mind can exist only in relation to other minds with shared meanings (Mead 1982: 5) CRITICISM THE END

Lamb to the slaughter a short story by Roald Dahl. Is about a woman so upset with her husband she kills him and how she keeps it a secret that she did it from the detectives. I will focus on the character Mary Maloney and how her character changes as the story progresses. At first Mary Maloney comes across as a loving house wife waiting for her husband to come home ‘now and again she would glance up at the clock but without anxiety, merely to please herself. ’ At first she acts nicely to her husband. She makes him drinks and asks if he is hungry. The key thing that changes her personality is her husband sits down and speaks to her we can only assume he was leaving her but to our astonishment she takes it in her stride and goes to get the leg of lamb but you can tell something is wrong when she walked across the room she couldn’t feel her feet touch the floor. It was a shock to the reader when she wacked her husband on the back of the head with the leg of lamb it wa s unexpected as she seemed so nice ‘At that point Mary Maloney walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of her head.’This makes her act a lot different from the start she is no longer a loving wife she is more she is more a cold hearted killer. Sam (the shop keeper) dose not suspect a thing he just thinks she’s getting some vegetables for her supper ‘I would like some potatoes please Sam, yes, and I think a can of peas. ’ The detectives thin it wasn’t her because she had an alibi that she was at Sam’s shop at the time of death. The detectives view her as a grieving house wife widow and do her favours like drink and eat the leg of lamb but they don’t know she killed Patrick with the leg of lamb that they were eating the fact she feeds the men the leg that she killed her husband with is disturbing My impression of Mary towards the end is that she has the making of a psycho and is capable of much more I am not on her side as she killed her husband and no matter what he said you just cant go round killing people.Mary by the end is manipulating everyone and its hard to see the ‘soft’ side of her that you see at the start I don’t know if fooling the detectives was the right thing to do because she has to live with the fact she has killed someone for the rest of her life but you know why she didn’t and you understand its for her unborn child and she doesn’t know what will happen to him/her ‘what was the laws about murder with unborn children or did they wait till the tenth month? What did they do?’Mary has changed her whole personality during the story she starts off nice and then she because becomes deserving The overall message of this is don’t judge a book by its cover what looks nice on the outside can be dark and evil on the inside. He imparts this perfectly th rew Mary because she was all nice at the beginning kills her husband covers it up and doesn’t get caught. I believe on the whole Mary was a victim as she has to live with the face she killed someone for the rest of her life.
